Attorneys address employer concerns over pay equity issues

National labor and employment law firm Fisher Phillips announced today the formation of a Pay Equity Practice Group.Dallas partner Janet Hendrick is a member of the group. Fisher Phillips launched the practice group in response to increasing concerns about recent legislative and regulatory initiatives targeting pay equity, which experts consider one of the most important employment issues of 2017 and beyond.

“We created the Pay Equity Practice Group to help employers respond to the challenging demands of equal pay laws, as they are becoming more prevalent and more complex,” said Hendrick. “We have seen a substantial increase in litigation seeking six and seven figure judgments in cases involving the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as some states.

“The newEEO-1 reporting requirement set to go into effect on January 1, 2017will requiremost employers to gather and report detailed pay data by sex, race and other categories for the first time ever,” continued Hendrick. “Because this data will become publicly available, we anticipate an even greater uptick in pay equity lawsuits, similar to the explosion of collective actions we have seen over the past several years under the Fair Labor Standards Act.”

The Pay Equity Practice Group provides counsel to employers on evolving state laws, helps companies implement proper pay practices, identifiesorganizational pay disparities, and defends claims of unlawful pay practices filed against employers.Pay equity poses a triple threat to employers given the mix of statutory law, litigation, and regulation. Fisher Phillips is dedicated to helping employers successfully navigate these issues.

The Pay Equity Practice Group, which is national in scope, is co-chairedby Fisher Phillips partners Kathleen McLeodCaminiti(New Jersey), Cheryl Behymer(Columbia), and Cheryl Pinarchick(Boston).
