Stephanie Coffman, a senior geomorphologist with Stantec’s Environmental Services practice, is the recipient of the Douglas R. Piteau Outstanding Young Member Award by the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists (AEG). The award honors one member each year for demonstrating excellence in technical accomplishments, service to the association, and service to the engineering geology profession.
AEG is a professional network of environmental and engineering geologists devoted to excellence and assuming stewardship over their fields of expertise. Acknowledged as an international industry leader, AEG contributes to its members’ professional success and the public welfare by providing leadership, advocacy, and applied field research, as well as offers industry information useful to practitioners, scientists, students, and the public.
Coffman is an active AEG member and serves the association in several capacities, including current chair for AEG’s Texas Chapter and regional director designate for Region 6 comprising Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Coffman has walked more than 400 miles of streams and rivers throughout her career to help communities across Texas understand and address various stream erosion issues in their projects. A thought leader in fluvial geomorphology, she has given seminars on geomorphic and stream erosion analysis nationwide. She was also recently published in the Journal of the American Water Resources Association as a co-author for the Development and Testing of a Physically Based Model of Streambank Erosion.
“Stephanie’s excitement for her work in fluvial geomorphology is contagious, and she has a natural ability to inspire people around her to learn more about this exciting profession,” said George Athanasakes, senior principal and leader for Stantec’s ecosystem restoration program. “She has worked tirelessly on advancing the profession through her leadership, technical knowledge, and passion for applied field research. She is very deserving of this award and recognition.”
Coffman received her master of science in geology from Baylor University. She is a Professional Geologist (PG) in Texas with 13 years of experience providing fluvial geomorphology and hydrology services for a variety of projects. She takes a resilient project approach that integrates river science into the overall engineering process to help protect vital infrastructure such as pipelines, roadways, parks, buildings, intakes, and outfalls. Her background includes a concentration in stream erosion mitigation, specializing in geological mapping, instream flow studies, sediment transport modeling and stable slope analysis, and natural channel techniques and design.
Stantec has offices throughout Texas that include professionals providing services in: architecture and interior design; civil, structural, and MEP engineering; surveying; land planning and landscape architecture; transportation; and water and wastewater engineering.
