Former Appeals Court Justice Jason Boatright Joins Cantey Hanger as Partner

Jason Boatright, most recently a Justice with the Fifth District Court of Appeals (Dallas), has joined Cantey Hanger LLP as a Partner, Managing Partner Michael Appleman announced.

Boatright will handle a variety of litigation and appellate matters in the Dallas and Fort Worth offices of Cantey Hanger.

“Justice Boatright will bring a unique set of skills and experiences to our litigation and appellate practice areas, of which we are already very proud, and his time with the Railroad Commission and Attorney General will be invaluable to clients who have matters before such agencies,” Appleman said.

Prior to serving as justice, Boatright’s employment history includes Regency Energy Partners, the Railroad Commission of Texas, where he was Director of the General Counsel Section and Special Counsel, and the Office of the Attorney General of Texas, where he served as Special Counsel and Chairman of the Opinions Division, writing opinions for the Attorney General and advising state agencies.

Justice Boatright earned the rank of Eagle Scout and has an interest in Texas legal history, writing, publishing and presenting on topics such as the English and Spanish origins of Texas civil procedure, the judges of Spanish and Mexican Texas, and the history of the words "justice" and "judge."

Boatright received his Bachelor’s in Arts from Middlebury College, and a post-graduate diploma from the University of St. Andrews in Latin and Ancient History. He earned his J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law in 2003.

During 1998-99, he was a staff assistant in the office of U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and, in 2001, he served as a Summer Law Clerk to Judge Melinda Harmon, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas.

His legal activities include Trustee, Texas Supreme Court Historical Society; Co-Chair, State Bar of Texas Appellate Section Bench-Bar Liaison Committee; Vice Chair, Dallas Bar Association Minority Participation Committee; University of Texas School of Law Alumni Steering Committee; and The Federalist Society, Dallas Lawyers’ Chapter.
