Samuel Lynne Galleries is pleased to announce that Tyler Shields will once again ascend on Dallas, TX this fall. Shields’ exhibition No Filter will open to the public September 14th from 5-8 pm and the exhibition will be on view through October 4, 2019.
Shields will be in attendance and the exhibition run will feature photographs from his latest Fairytale, Lion, and Chicago series, as well as a collection of floral still-life photographs inspired by Irving Penn’s work, and a collection of Shields’ personal favorites from his Dirty Side of Glamour and Provocateur series.
A Jacksonville, FL native, Shields has spent the last few decades making a name for himself in Los Angeles, CA, and has become a creative tour de force in the photography & film industries. The photographer’s willingness to test boundaries has earned him praise from critics around the world. Often collaborating with celebrities, models, comedians, athletes, and actors for his provocative projects, Shields’ photographs are iconic and are making their mark in prestigious collections around the world. There are few artists who – through tremendous study of the works of those who came before them – change the recourse of photography, and Shields is one of them.
With this collection, Shields has once again secured recognition & attention as an artist who urges audiences – when confronted with an unfamiliar style – to expand their appreciation for photography and welcome his genre of controversy. He has explored different techniques to capture the details of fabrics, pigments, colors, and textures, in the most vivid way using trial & error, but as Shields says, “In the art world, trial and error has no error, only trial.” He is introducing the viewer to the invaluable concepts of photography – the complexity of the science & technology, and the talent & risk of both the subjects & photographer. Yet, he somehow maintains a visible effortlessness in his work; emphasizing that photography remains what it has always been – a tool for the creativity of the artist.
Using arduous photography techniques and bold processes is no new concept for Shields. In this collection he often uses a large format, 8 x 10 camera to achieve the highest resolution. For printing, Shields explores the silver gelatin printing process to achieve maximum smoothness and a wider range of black & white tones, and also utilizes the almost-obsolete dye-transfer printing, which achieves some of the most vibrant color possible in the field of photography. Inspired by a Master of Photography, Shields tips his hat to Irving Penn’s infamous florals by creating a series of still-lifes with the truest reproduction of the flowers, due to the highly saturated colors. With a stark focus on structure, texture, palette and anatomical function, Shields produces images that are startling, but also unconventionally beautiful & erotic, providing viewers with a renewed experience of iconic artworks.
Recent years have proven to be some of the most impressive for Shields’ career, as he is now represented in galleries across the U.S. & Europe, has collaborated on a limited edition merchandise collection with Urban Outfitters, created an evocative documentary with YouTube Red, and had several exclusive Limited Edition photographs go to auction at Christie’s, Phillips, & Sotheby’s.
