HaiDiLao, a world-renowned hot pot restaurateur, has selected NewQuest Properties' Katy Grand in west Houston for its first location in Texas and sixth in the U.S.
The Chinese restaurant chain's accolades are many, including being dubbed the "Ferrari of hot pot restaurants" by famed Los Angeles Times' food critic Jonathan Gold. HaiDiLao has leased a 6,295-sf end cap in Katy Grand, a class A showcase for experiential-focused dining and entertainment and leading retail brands.
"HaiDiLao and the soon-to-open Michelin-rated Tim Ho Wan will solidify Katy Grand's reputation as a foodie destination in Houston and statewide," says Heather Nguyen, development partner of Houston-based NewQuest Properties. "We are strongly committed to attracting the 'best of the best' global cuisines for Katy Grand."
Nguyen and Rebecca Le, a senior vice president with NewQuest, represented the landlord in the long-term lease talks, which got underway last summer. HaiDiLao Hotpot's tenant representative was Pierre Yu, an independent broker in Houston.
The China-based chain owns nearly 600 restaurants worldwide, four of which are located in California and New York. Seattle is poised to open in the near future. The Katy Grand restaurant tentatively is slated to come on line in early 2021.
HaiDiLao Hotpot will anchor a 16,900-sf building that's currently under construction in Katy Grand's phase II. Tenant finish-out is expected to get underway in the summer. Sun Builders Co. of Houston is the general contractor.
Katy Grand is a two-phase development set on roughly 30 acres at the junction of Interstate 10 and the Grand Parkway/TX 99 in the heart of one of the highest-growth residential markets in the nation and adjacent to the University of Houston's new 46-acre campus. NewQuest's mixed-use project is anchored by a 19-screen Cinemark theater and six-level, 1,727-space Metropark garage, primarily used by commuters en route each day to the city's leading employment centers.
"Katy Grand is a destination, an oasis for dining and entertainment in the western suburbs," Nguyen says. "HaiDiLao is a premium brand that will attract customers from near and far."
HaiDiLao's specialty fare is Szechuan hot pot, which is cooked at diners' tables. Dancing noodles, prepared by servers, are part of the family-friendly experience, as are other dining attractions designed to enhance the visit and offset wait times. Many of the chain's overseas restaurants feature robot servers.
"HaiDiLao is private about its plans," Nguyen says, "so we're not sure what niche features will be introduced in Katy. We do know it will be upscale, authentic and a new culinary adventure for our project."
